Unlocking Architectural Creativity in Public Spaces with Terrazzo

Insights from Architect Daniel Justiniano

For architects, a material that blends limitless design potential with enduring performance is a transformative choice. Terrazzo delivers both, as Daniel Justiniano, project administrator at Justin Architects in Fort Lauderdale, attests. Overseeing projects at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), the Broward County Courthouse, and other local airports, Mr. Justiniano champions terrazzo’s versatility and durability as a cornerstone material for high-traffic public spaces.

“Terrazzo takes center stage for flooring in airport terminals,” Justiniano said. “It’s always our go-to option.” Its adaptability enables varied designs. “Terrazzo gives the openness and flexibility to provide whatever design the space needs,” he said. “We see it as a canvas.”

A prime example is the Hibiscus Bridge, a pedestrian walkway at FLL. Collaborating with Creative Terrazzo Systems and artist Marielle Plaisir, the project showcases a poured-in-place terrazzo installation with intricate floral patterns. Handcrafted without divider strips for seamless transitions, it integrates art into a functional space, enriching the experience for countless travelers.

Durability is paramount. “Public buildings need materials that hold up over time,” he said. “With proper polishing and maintenance, we know a terrazzo floor will still be in great shape 40 years later.”

Working with experts ensures quality. “I always recommend someone very knowledgeable who understands how to install a floor that won’t break, crack, or shrink,” Mr. Justiniano said. His experience specifying terrazzo has evolved through learning about joint systems and crack-resistance methods. “Working with skilled specialists has been transformative,” the architect said. “They become teammates; there’s a level of trust. We say we’re going after a look, and they know how to achieve it.”

At the Hibiscus Bridge, National Terrazzo & Mosaic Association member contractor Creative Terrazzo Systems delivered precise and lasting installations, earning the confidence of Justiniano and airport authorities. For architects, terrazzo’s fusion of design freedom and longevity redefines the possibilities of public space.
