Terrazzo So Good You’ll Want to Step Into History—and Eat Mor Chikin

At Hapeville’s Chick-fil-A Dwarf House, terrazzo transforms the space into a story-rich canvas. Diamond patterns, sunbursts, and embedded tributes honor the restaurant’s 1946 origins, ready to stand up to generations of diners.

In 2022, the original Chick-fil-A Dwarf House in Hapeville, Georgia, reopened after its first major renovation since 1967. The project doubled the dining space—and presented a unique challenge for the design team: how do you honor the 1946 origins of an iconic brand and tell its story? How do you create a floor that can share space with artifacts while surviving decades of continuous visitors?

CFA-Dwarf-HouseThe goal was not just a functional restaurant—it was a functioning monument. Every design choice was to honor the restaurant’s origins, embed meaning, and ensure durability for high-volume daily operations.

Terrazzo became the medium through which the location could tell its story. Versatile and emblematic of the early diner era, terrazzo allowed the team to embed diamond patterns, sunbursts, and signature arches that reference the restaurant’s history, as well as permanent tributes to long-time staff who helped shape the narrative. Terrazzo walls, curbs, and restroom counters ensure the space can withstand abuse. It’s a material that can carry both heavy foot traffic and heavy meaning.

Without the design flexibility of terrazzo, the space could have been reduced to a generic dining room. The wrong material choices would have compromised durability, weakened authenticity, and diluted the narrative of the brand’s origins.

The Dwarf House now boasts a brand-new, branded terrazzo floor that is functional, easy to maintain, and full of stories. Guests can explore the floor, dine from the modern menu, or step back in time with classic Dwarf Grill fare. Tours reveal the meaning behind every detail. And yes, there’s merchandise.

The Dwarf House shows how the infinite possibilities of terrazzo in the hands of a thoughtful designer, in this case, Selser Schaefer Architects of Tulsa, can create a space that is tough, beautiful, and narrative-rich—a floor that honors history while performing for the future.
