For Airport Retail Space
For a new flagship department store at Tampa International Airport, ID & Design International’s design team needed flooring that would allow them to create a unique look while handling high traffic flow.
They turned to terrazzo, a flooring that gave them the flexibility to achieve a winsome and award-winning beach-inspired design along with the durability and longevity needed for the LEED-certified project and busy location.
“We wanted the flooring to have a bright and inviting appearance while still being able to withstand the high traffic,” said Wendy Wright, Airport Team Director with ID & Design, of Ft. Lauderdale. “Terrazzo was the perfect fit.”
Six bold epoxy terrazzo colors evoke several distinct ocean shades contrasted with sandy beach tones at Newslink’s Shoppes at Bayshore. A single aggregate mix, brightened with clear and mirror glass, mother-of-pearl, and white marble, provides consistency in texture throughout the color palette. The 7,100-square-foot installation’s curvilinear pattern is echoed in the ceiling.
“We especially love the iridescence from the mother-of-pearl and mirrored glass,” Wright said.
The local terrazzo contractor, Steward Mellon Company, printed full-size templates of the flowing terrazzo pattern, which they then traced onto the substrate to honor the design intent precisely. Eighth-inch aluminum divider strips separate each color. The floor is polished to a 120-grit matte finish.
Steward Mellon, a member of the National Terrazzo & Mosaic Association (NTMA), received a 2022 Honor Award from the trade association for the installation. The annual award program recognizes member-installed terrazzo projects, based on creativity, design, and quality of craftsmanship. The program promotes member contractors as the only resource for terrazzo installations that meet the highest industry standards, and ensures that terrazzo continues to deliver design plus durability.
