At We-Ka-Po Casino Resort
The terrazzo floor in the central courtyard atrium of the We-Ka-Po Casino Resort, owned by the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, honors the local indigenous peoples. It is also revered for its superior durability and ease of maintenance.
The symbolism is expressed in a stylized depiction of Montezuma Well, sacred to the Yavapai people. Traditional basketry motifs evokes the culture of the Yavapai and imagery of the surrounding desert, and the Verde River celebrates the unique character of the place.
It is an installation that showcases both design versatility and low-maintenance practicality, according to Frank Gonzales, environmental services manager at the Fort McDowell, AZ, casino for the past 10 years.
“Because it’s harder, like concrete,” Gonzales explained. “Wood floors are easily scratched. As for tile, I’m not a fan of grouting. It gets dirty even if you seal it.”
Vinyl floors are also easy to maintain, but don’t last nearly as long as terrazzo.
Gonzales shared his preferred method of upkeep on the floor. He cleans the floors every night and scrubs them at least twice a week. He uses an auto-scrubber with loose brushes. Specifically, he follows the following simple steps:
- Dry-mop the floor to remove loose dust.
- Using plain water or a neutral (neither acidic or alkaline) cleaner, wet mop the floor and let the cleaner sit on the floor for several minutes to dissolve the dirt, ensuring the entire floor surface remains wet to prevent the loosened dirt from drying back onto the floor.
- Rinse the floor thoroughly with clean water, or use a wet vacuum or squeegee to remove the dirty water. If the floor is heavily soiled repeated rinses may be necessary to remove the dirt.
- After the floor is dry, machine buffing will restore shine.
Seamless Toughness
The architect on the project was David Nejelski, Creative Director + Principal with TBE Architects in Olivette, MO. The firm has specialized in hotel, casino, and resort design since 1971.
Because casinos are generally connected to a hotel, Nejelski recommends terrazzo for the same reason it’s so often specified for airports. A seamless, durable floor offers greater ease of movement with wheeled luggage compared to tile with mortar joints or carpet, yet without serious slippage problems.
The architect added that the proper maintenance schedule with the right methods and machinery is a critical element of owning a terrazzo floor.
“But once you get that down it’s very user-friendly and maintenance-friendly,” he said.
At over 166,000 square feet with over 25,000 square feet of meeting and events space, the renovated casino nearly doubled the size of the Fort McDowell Casino it replaced. Since reopening in late 2020, the resort has captivated guests with award-winning golf courses, spectacular views, a 24-hour casino and gaming facility, fine dining, and salon services.
Award-Winning Floors
We-Ka-Po’s striking 3,900-square-foot terrazzo design, with nine epoxy colors sparkling with glass and mirror aggregate, was installed by Advance Terrazzo of Phoenix. The National Terrazzo & Mosaic Association (NTMA) included the project on its list of 2022 Honor Award winners in its annual award program recognizing outstanding installations by its member contractors.
The same year, the NTMA also honored Advance Terrazzo year for its work on terrazzo floors in Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport’s newest Sky Train Stations. The platform of the 24th Street station happened to be designed by Gonzales’ son, artist Frank Gonzales.
Gonzalez noted that “terrazzo floors are making a big comeback” in the area. This is an effect not lost on the average guest, often seen photographing the floor, which is complemented by lighting with small bulbs reminiscent of rain drops.
“Terrazzo has a special attraction,” he said.
