Terrazzo Royalty:

April Meyer and Her Millions

Interior designer April Meyer of Alliiance was the designing force behind securing two of the National Terrazzo & Mosaic Association (NTMA) top honors in 2023. Ms. Meyer’s expertise shone in both standout projects: the terrazzo floor at the Minneapolis Convention Center, named the prestigious Job of the Year, and “Over an Arkansas Sky”, by Artist Tiffany Black, at the Little Rock airport, the winner of a Judge’s Choice Honor Award in art. Both jobs showcase the designer’s versatility and terrazzo’s design flexibility, demonstrating the medium’s capacity to evoke a strong sense of place.

Floor designed by April Meyer“Terrazzo is such a perfect medium to work with, especially for high-traffic areas,” Ms. Meyer declared. “You are only inhibited by your own creativity and budget.” Her firm also recommends it as a monolithic system, free from grout joints and the clicking sound of wheels rolling over them.

Known as the “terrazzo queen” among her colleagues, Ms. Meyer boasts a wealth of experience. Her journey with terrazzo began in the early 2000s, and she has since designed or overseen well over two million square feet of terrazzo, including 50-plus airport projects. Ms. Meyer noted that advancements in epoxy and waterjet technologies have transformed the terrazzo landscape since she started, expanding the ability to create intricate designs.

Though her experience has established her as the authority on terrazzo in her firm, Ms. Meyers leverages the expertise of others and her connections to what she calls her “trusted people” in terrazzo. “Know what you don’t know and rely on the people who do,” she recommends.

She further recommends terrazzo designers not “take this incredible medium and make it look like VCT, with only small aggregate and no sparkle.” Mirror and crystal-clear glass aggregates bring out the color and texture of the aggregates, and she always includes mother-of-pearl for its sparkle, richness, and warmth.

Ms. Meyer acknowledges the invaluable contributions of the NTMA contractors whose expertise was integral to the success of the projects: Advance Terrazzo of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, and Missouri Terrazzo of St. Louis. “You can’t have a beautiful floor like that without an amazing installer,” she said.
