A Midcentury Modern Revival in Terrazzo
The 3,446-square-foot Rising Glen residence in the Hollywood Hills underwent a meticulous renovation that preserves its midcentury modern character while adapting the home for contemporary living. The remodel enhances the home’s original elegance and reflects the neighborhood’s midcentury heritage.
Architect Jennifer Yano collaborated with developers and interior designers Eric Choi and Philippe Naouri of Maison d’Artiste, a Los Angeles studio celebrated for restoring high-profile midcentury modern properties for today’s lifestyles.
“We all love terrazzo for its affinity to midcentury modern design and its ability to create a clean, monolithic uniformity in a space,” Ms. Yano noted.
Central to the renovation is a Monolithic terrazzo system that defines the home’s elegance and flow. The thinnest of the cementitious terrazzo systems, it is ideal for controlled environments with a stable substrate. Monolithic terrazzo is approximately half an inch thick and bonded directly to a flat concrete slab. Durable, low-maintenance, and inherently noncombustible, terrazzo also supports resilience in fire-prone regions such as the Hollywood Hills.
The Venetian terrazzo mix, a traditional style incorporating larger-than-standard aggregates (sizes 4–7), introduces texture and visual depth while maintaining a clean, monochromatic finish. Terrazzo flows throughout the interior living areas and extends to the outdoor pool terrace, where a sculptural hot tub and cascading waterfall form the heart of the home’s outdoor experience.
Installed by Over the Top Terrazzo & Tile of El Monte, California, the Rising Glen Renovation earned a 2025 NTMA Honor Award for outstanding craftsmanship and terrazzo artistry.
